In typical South Dakota fashion, we went from 33 degrees, to 76 degrees, and back down to 45 degrees. Normal for around here. The problem is the last three days high winds blew the cages off of my roses. Therefore, the roses got a taste of sunshine and warm weather. They are ready to leaf out. We had a chat yesterday as I covered them back up. I reminded them that it was only April and I normally don't unleash them until the middle of May. In fact, we had about two feet of snow this time last year. I don't think they are going to listen to me. I understand the yearning for sunshine. Going from 76 yesterday to a windy snowy 45 was a bit crushing for me.
Maybe they know more than I do and we will have an early spring. If they know they aren't saying anything.
On a positive note, I did have a small group of evening grosbeaks. They used to come to the feeders by the dozen, but they have been rare the last few years. It was a pleasant surprise this morning.
I enjoyed being able to garden this weekend, I just hope that the weather stays warm and the winds would calm down. How is the weather where you are? Is it spring there?

I've never seen such a bird. It's pretty! I think I lost my lilac blooms...early warm weather made them bud, and this week we've had several hard freezes. :( So disappointing.
ReplyDeleteMy shrub roses are trying to leaf out too. Cold and windy here.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful small leaves of the roses. Plants are also living being and we can have a chat with them which will make them grow quicker. Beautiful bird...
ReplyDeleteThe weather has been strange here too. I have leaves all over my roses and then a frost warning. We survived that but still have a chance for another week officially; however, I have seen it frost until the end of April
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful bird! It's amazing what roses (especially hardy shrub roses) can endure. -Jenn
ReplyDeleteThe rapid change of temperature reminds me of those in Poland. One day you can wear a short sleeve and another there might be snow. But in UK it is rather mild and windy. Your roses are liking the warmth and hopefully there is more days like this to come soon:)
ReplyDeleteI'm going to plant a rose or two this year. I haven't decided which variety yet.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the grosbeaks for a few days. We have one more rainy day then it's warming back up to the 50*'s so I suspect they are gone until next winter. It was nice to have them as long as we did.
I hope to be done with snow.I am ready to see some produce and more flowers.
ReplyDeleteMost of my perennials made it through the "Big Chill," except for my hydrangea's top leaves browned, but as long as the buds weren't out yet, they should be fine. Crazy Spring! XOXO
