Happy surprises...

I am so happy.  I have a hummingbird.  My first year here we had about 5 all summer.  Then number slowly dwindled to zilch.  I've had three sad years of nothing.  A glimpse in the spring and another in the fall.  That was it.  Lo and behold, this year I have one and it is staying.  It is skittish and doesn't sit long, but I'm not complaining.

The other day to my surprise I looked to my left and there was a cedar waxwing.  I've only seen a flock of them one other time here.  He was a pretty dapper looking fellow.  I do have a bad feeling he is competing with me when it comes to berry picking.

It was a wonderful birding week here.  Hope everyone else had a pleasant week.

  2. I love the hummers so much, it is a thrill every time I see one in the garden. They are so skittish though. Some day maybe I'll get a good photo.

  3. We love Cedar Waxwings, last summer when I was picking a lot of mulberries I think I had a few screeching at me. They are beautiful birds though. My 11 year old son is an avid birder!!

  4. Congrats on the hummingbird! We have one that flies through our yard, but I lost my hummingbird feeder to mold so it doesn't stop. Need to get another, for sure! :)

  5. Congrats on your hummingbird! We had a couple around for about ten days and then they just disappeared. Haven't seen any in a couple of weeks now.

  6. Planting tubular shaped flowers, and just a wide variety of flowers brings those hummers in.I don't think one can have too many feeders.Lovely shots!

  7. It's wonderful to be able to shoot good photos of birds, something which I'm not able to do for the time being.

  8. So exciting! We only get an occasional hummer passing through in spring and then again in fall. Migration, I figure. I've only ever seen a cedar waxwing once. So beautiful. Lucky you!

  11. I was noticing my hummingbird feeder this morning. My hummingbirds won't touch it until it has sat in the sun and turned into what I think is nectar wine. Then in a week they slurp the stuff down. It is almost empty now and needs to be refilled. I will refill it and I will see them come taste it and fly away. I haven't noticed any tipsy hummingbirds. :)
We will be getting the flocks of Cedar waxwings soon now. You got such a good shot of that one.

  12. We don't have Cedar Waxwings here, and I didn't think we had any hummingbirds until last year when I first caught a glimpse of them--Even though their numbers are few, I love seeing them at the feeder I put up for them. (I love your feeder by way!!)

  13. Aren't the cedar waxwings a gorgeous bird. When we used to walk on Farm Island, there were flocks of them. We would just stop to watch them and they would just flit from tree to tree. Nice pics.

  14. Oh! I love the Cedar Waxwings! Early this Spring I happened upon a flock of them in about 10 trees at a shopping center parking lot! There were hundreds of them! It was so exciting. I haven't noticed a decline in my hummingbirds, thank goodness. Hopefully it's a good sign that you at least one returning!

  15. I got to see my very first Cedar Waxwing the other day, well I saw a blur that my sister said was one, lol.

  16. The hummers are having a 'dog-fight' over the feeder. - "I was here first - no, I was here first...." Then today I watched 2 crows challenging 2 red-tailed hawks. The crows were quite voicterous, but they were the ones to leave first. Entertained me for about 10 minuets. Aren't we blessed?

  17. No one should have to go that long without seeing a hummingbird in the garden. I'm so glad you have one visiting frequently again. And the cedar waxwing is so beautiful! I rarely see those except at migration times and wish I saw more of them.

  20. Oh! What I would give to see a real life Cedar Waxwing! :)

Hope he didn't eat all your berries. I have about 20 hummingbirds fighting all day at all my feeders. They actually have me staying off the porch right now, because they are ferocious little things when it comes to their nectar. I need to move the feeders next year, but I do love seeing them coming right to the porch through my windows.
