Getting in the Greenhouse

I was lucky enough to get into the greenhouse this weekend.  Of course my trusty sidekick guarded the door against spinach thieves (Don't be fooled, she is the spinach thief).  Despite the surrounding snow it was quite balmy inside.

I planted the spinach and lettuce late last fall.  I was curious to see how early the seeds would germinate.  They did great and I have to say the baby spinach is delicious.  I have planted lettuce and spinach earlier in the fall with random luck.  If it is up when winter hits, I've had both success and failure.

I also transplanted my tiny tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, and one giant pumpkin.  I surrounded the giant pumpkin with sunflower seeds.  The goal is to have the sunflowers go out the top of the greenhouse and provide an avenue for the giant pumpkin.  Hopefully, this will help with the problem of an early hail out.  I also bit the bullet and thinned the chamomile.  Which is prolific as always.
In a wink the greenhouse was planted.  It is still too early for the outside beds.  I do see last years leeks, garlic, rhubarb, and my asparagus is peeking up.  This will be the year to harvest the asparagus.  A long time coming since I started it from seed.

Next week I will unveil the orchard, as a majority has melted.  Of course that will depend on how much snow we get from tomorrows storm.   Don't worry Ella, sooner or later I will be out there gardening with you.

How does your gardens grow?  Are you laughing that I am just getting my seeds in?  Do  you have any major garden goals?  What is your specialty?  I am anxious to hear.

  1. I like your greenhouse! What a fun place to get to dig in the dirt when it's still too cold outside. My garden is waaayyy behind this spring. I have lettuce and kale planted...but I'm afraid my potatoes might have rotted. :( Enjoy your asparagus!

  3. Oh, what a wonderful post. So glad you have things growing and that you have such a good Spinach Guard. I also really like your fork/cork plant labels. What a great idea!

  4. I think your green house looks fantastic. I really like how many of your crops have come up.
I am still in a quandary over whether or not to have a garden. I have my beets in and that is it. My seedlings are still in the trays.
The drought is so bad that I just think maybe next year but we will see come Saturday. I have never seen it so dry in my whole life. We had rain this week, and there was no moisture at all. It was weird.

  5. All I have is my spuds and onions planted. I did try to put a little lettuce outside, but not sure it'll grow. The garlic is up. My soil is still too cold to plant other seeds. Maybe I could set out some pea seeds. I don't think I have a specialty. I'm just thankful for every bit of homegrown produce I get. Love the pic of you in your greenhouse peering out through misty glass.

  7. Even though we haven't your snow we don't plant seeds too early or plant out tender plants until the end of May. I hope you are soon snow free,

  8. I've never heard of planting spinach seeds in the fall--but it seems like a really good idea. I wonder if it would work to plant them directly in the garden in the late fall.
