Idle hands

Over Christmas I took photos of some of the handmade things the talented women in my family has made over the years.  It is amazing what people can do with idle hands.

These pot holders were tatted by my Great Grandmother, Mammy. I never met Mammy, but she sounds like a woman after my own heart.  She had a big orchard and garden and loved berries.  My Mom decided to display these works of art and hung them in the kitchen.

I really love to look at the detail in them.  I'm so glad my Mom decided to display them.  There were many more.  I just posted my favorites.

Not much else is going on here.  It was a warm weekend, but now it sounds like we are in for a cold spell.  I hope everyone is staying warm and enjoying the winter.

  2. They are pretty ! My mum was good at making things like sewing she was a seamstress in England , knitting , crochet , embroidery , baking and cooking I guess it was because she was in world war 2 and back then you had to learn how to make home made things ! We are waiting for a snow, rain freezing rain storm to hit ! Have a good day !

  4. I love the old-fashioned style of pot holders. So very much work stitched into them.

  5. My sister actually has a lot of the crochet "doilies" that my father's mother made. I think I have just the one, but its a keepsake, as I'm sure seeing the collection your mother has of your grandmothers is. Quiet is good sometimes, enjoy it, XOXO

  6. Very nice. My mom had some of those made by my grandmas, etc. I often wonder how they had the time to do intricate work since there were NO modern conveniences. But then no TV, computers, texting, etc to distract them in the evenings. And if they did the work in the evenings it was done either my lamp or candle light. Thanks for sharing.

  12. Oh these are lovely and it's wonderful they are being displayed, so many toss them forgetting or not caring about the heritage.
