Your guess is better than mine...

Deer love strawberries.  What does that have to do with the photo of a strange moth?  Well, I put a net over my strawberry bed to keep the deer out.  This morning I found it can also keep a moth in.  I snapped some photos and then set him free.  For as stalwart as he looks, he was a bit of a panicky ninny when I let him go.

I wanted to seem really smart and looked on the Internet  for hours trying to figure out what type of moth he was, so I could give you some fancy Latin name for him.  The jig is up; I have no clue what he is and I'm not so smart (or patient as I got sick of looking at moth photos).  In fact I am now a little overwhelmed by the number of bugs in this world.  Anyway I know there are people smarter and far more patient than I out there.  If you know what he is could you identify him for me.  He must be some type of Sphinx.

I love the bottom photo.  He looks so tough.

  6. Well, my guess is not as good as yours, lol, because I have never seen ANYTHING like that before! I can only imagine the size and shape of the caterpillar it was. It kinda looks like a bat or something. I'll be staying tuned to see if anyone does know what type of moth it is. Phew, that's a big one!

  8. I think the prize goes to Randy Emmitt. I looked on-line and that seems to be him. You can't see the colorful bottom wings, until he becomes a panicky ninny. At that point I was too busy dealing with a paniked moth to take photos. Thanks for your help.

  11. I think he is gorgeous. He is the night flying type. I always think really it might just be a fairy you caught by mistake and it is in disguise.
I think that when I see your beautiful yard.

  14. Glad you found out what he is. My sister is a bug/moth freak, so I was going to ask her if you still hadn't gotten an answer.
