Winter is coming...

Winter is coming.  It was bound to happen.  We have had a good run of it.  One of the nicest falls we have had for a long time.  I didn't need the weather service to tell me a storm was coming the birds and chipmunks were a pretty good indicator.

The chipmunks really enjoy the squirrel feeder my parents gave me.
The cry of the cranes as they fly over.
The turkeys are frequent visitors.  Would they be so bold if they knew Thanksgiving is around the corner?
The goldfinches, pine siskens, and white breasted nuthatches are sure thirsty.
If you are wondering why there are so many sunflower hulls in my bird bath the photo below will explain.  He likes to picnic by the water.

This nuthatch has it all figured out.  He grabs a seed from the feeder, crams it into the crack, and then pecks until he gets it open.  It is a pretty slick deal.  The pine sisken below is looking to see if the nuthatch is getting seeds from the crevasse.  He seems confused.

I'm very pleased with the bird bath and feeder we made from the old cow drinking bowls.  On one side the blue jay is getting a drink and on the other he gets his peanuts.
I guess I'm as ready for the snow as I will ever be.  Hope my furred and feathered friends have filled their bellies.

  1. Good idea, those cow drinkers turned feeders! We have a few of those around. I hope the coming winter is kind to you!

  2. You have a lot of nice guests. I saw chipmunks in Italy being sold as pets, my dogs would love a few more. LOL

  3. Birds here, very similar to yours, have been emptying my feeders too and winter isn't quite as close as it is for you. What a neat reuse of an old equipment to make the feeder.

  4. I thought of you when I read the weather forecast. I love all of these beautiful pictures of all of the wonderful animals and birds you have around your house.
I think that is a wonderful thing to do with a waterer. I have one on my junk pile. I have stared at it trying to figure out what to do with it.
    Stay warm. :)

  6. I'm not ready for this cold or snow. We got 3-4 inches on the prairie.

  7. Winter indeed! Did you get snow the other day like Minnesota did? We've had tons of lady bugs on our screens and my grandfather always said that was a sign of a cold winter coming...please say it's not so, XOXO

  8. The chipmunk is adorable. I haven't seen any pine siskins since we lived in PA, and even there they weren't regular visitors (the winters were unusually cold the 3 years we were there). I still remember their "zipper" call well though.

  9. Hi dear Bonnie,

Well, these perfect nature photos made my heart ache. The cranes flying over, the birds, the little chip chip stuffing his cheeks, it all is wonderful. Your garden and home look well loved and well tended. I really like seeing the beautiful paradise you've created.

Thank you for sharing your life,

    Shaorn
