There are bears in them there woods...

Last night my husband awoke to the sound of my birdseed bin crashing.  He had been ready, as something had tipped it over the night before.  We anticipated some wayward racoons.  He was not prepared for what he found.

That's right.  A big black bear.  We aren't supposed to have bears here, but I guess someone forgot to tell him.  I'm pretty sure he has been around awhile.  Unfortunately, due to the early hailstorm there are absolutely no berries anywhere.  I don't know what else he has to eat until the acorns ripen.  We watched him for about 20 minutes and then scared him off.  It was truly amazing.  I am blessed we had the chance to watch him, but we don't want him to get in trouble.  My greenhouse is shut up tight, the seed is gone, the bird feeders in the house, and trash can in the garage.  Hopefully he won't find my sweet corn and beans.  I'm sure he will be back tonight, but hopefully he will realize there is nothing to see here and move on.  Still, I am thankful we had a chance to see him up close.

  1. Oh my! People get blackbears about an hour north of us, but here it would be raccoons tearing down the bird feeder. I would probably want to watch him for a while as well! - Jenn

  3. How interesting! You are the second person I have read about that have had visits from a black bear, where there aren't bears. I have been reading Farmers Almanac and it has me wondering if its going to be a cold winter. I am so glad you were able to get pictures. That is amazing.

  4. Wow! No birdfeeders allowed around here until bears go hibernate. But I can understand why you had it up if there weren't supposed to bears in our area. He's a big one. When is hunting season for bears?

    1. There is no hunting season, because we don't have bears. Or at least we didn't think we had bears.

  7. I agree. I think the meat is great. The lard is amazing and I made some beautiful jewelry from their claws. He had such a beautiful coat. This one hasn't returned and really didn't hurt anything except to tip the can. I am locking up all temptation so he doesn't end up in trouble.
